The stone is of basalt, 3.7 meters wide and weighs 24 tons. The sunstone was probably used primarily as a ceremonial altar, including for the Aztec human sacrifices, and not as an astrological and astronomical map.  Today, it is located in Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
