When plague bacteria proliferate in the blood, septicemic plague develops. It can develop independently or as a side effect of the pneumonic or bubonic plague. With a case-fatality ratio of 30% to 100% if untreated, the plague is a very serious illness that affects individuals, especially in its septicaemic (systemic infection brought on by circulating bacteria in the bloodstream) and pneumonic stages.
