Italy celebrates all saints and all souls day on november 1 and 2. It is known as la festa di ognissanti.
All Saints' Day is a national holiday in Italy as well as a Catholic feast day. Post offices, banks and education institutions are closed nationwide on this day. The day is devoted to remembering all of the martyrs and saints who gave their lives to uphold Catholicism. Although the event may seem sad, the day itself is joyful. Many Italians join the famous midday mass following a vibrant procession through the city center. The remainder of the day is naturally devoted to a wonderful meal with friends and family.
Italians observe Il Giorno dei Morti, sometimes referred to as The Day of the Dead or All Souls' Day on the morning of November 2 as a day to honor the deceased. People visit cemeteries with flowers and candles to honor their departed loved ones. Families come together for another feast after paying respects. Each area has its own distinctive dolci dei morti or bread sweets.
