We are all aware that conflict is essential for maintaining audience interest, evoking an emotional response, and eventually moving the plot along. Without conflict, a movie, TV show, or book may come off as a little boring. It's also true that all conflict "types" - internal, external, interpersonal, interpersonal vs social, etc. can be used to define conflict.
Even if all of those things are useful, the definition is not complete. This essay adopts a broad viewpoint, explaining why conflict is necessary in the first place before addressing what conflict is in a story.
The challenges a character encounters outside of the story's narrative are known as external conflict. A character's mental or emotional challenges are referred to as internal conflict. A character's worldview or belief system and the environment they live in cause moral or philosophical difficulties.
